Reframing Accessibility as Search Engine Visibility
A classic quote from Mark Pilgrim:
"The next time someone stands up in a design meeting and claims that you don’t have any blind customers, ask them if they care about search engine placement. Then remind them that Google is a blind user who reads the entire Internet every month, and then reports what it sees to millions of its closest friends."
Mark is really paraphrasing a something Karsten M. Self wrote in a post to the linux-elitists mailinglist in January 2002:
"Google is, for all intents, a blind user. A billionaire blind user with tens of millions of friends, all of whom hang on his every word. I suspect Google will have a stronger impact than the ADA in building accessible websites."
