Friendster is kinda cool - especially for inhabitants of a small island-nation like Iceland with a population of less than 300 thousand people, where the social network is very dense. However, the practicality of the whole thing, outside the scope of dating, remains to be seen.
It still makes you wonder how extremely valuable that e-mail database must be for direct-marketing firms and spammers. Friendster's privacy policy sounds very safe and nice and one can only hope that they'll not make drastic policy changes somewhere down the line - like eBay and Amazon did a few years ago.
But hey, it's way cool to be able to browse your social network (or a small sub-net of it) on a user-friendly website.
P.S. Note to self: Remeber to create a Friend of a Friend (FOAF) page, publish it, and advocate the FOAF thing to all my friends. When less busy.

Isn't this FOAF going to be the golden land of marketers? Publicly available and nicely structured in XML. I can se the spammers and worm authors get all worked up.
I'm more likely to open an email from mar|anomy.net than from hotchick@fakedomain.com, specially if the evil spammer has harvested phrases and/or keywords from mar.anomy.net and thorarinn.com to create an interesting subject line.
Perhaps I'm just paranoid?

It would actually be easy to program a spam robot to harvest names from comment systems in blogs and then to post just a link with an universal "check this out" message. If, for example, "Már" were to post a comment saying just "you gotta see this" and then a link, I would click on that link ;-) The fact that only three or four blogging tools are used by 90% of all bloggers means that creating such a spam robot should be even more simple...
PS. Tóró: Send me as many copies of MSBLAST.EXE as you want. I use a brilliantly simple solution which works against most virii (I don´t use Microsoft software).

Since we both seem to know exactly how to create the perfect spam-emails, perhaps it is time to step over to the dark side?
Any takers in hiring consultants on how to harvest blogs and websites for the ultimate direct email marketing? - Only for the good of mankind, of course ;)
