URL-Design Links and News
Last week, Nathan Ashby-Kuhlman wrote an excellent series of articles where he takes a look at a bunch of different News websites, and reviews and rates how well their article URLs are designed. There are altogether 8 articles in the series:
- Day 0 - basic principles.
- Day 1 - mixed examples.
- Day 2 - the really bad and the really good.
- Day 3 - focus on dates in URLs.
- Day 4 - the big players' URLs.
- Day 5 - mixed examples.
- Day 6 - recommendations.
- Day 7 - nouns and verbs (on permanent vs. temporary URLs).
Elsewhere, Matthew Thomas takes a look at cruft in weblog URLs in his article How to recognize a Weblog tool by its [default] permalinks. Informative stuff.
In other URL-design news: "J$" Pushes back on my increasingly well linked to "howto" about Future-Proof URLs in MT.
Here's a final thought: If you're work for a company buying a bloody expensive CMS to run its websites, I suggest you ask your vendor whether the CMS produces nice and clean, future-proof URLs. Say it's on your list of level-A priority feature requests. Make them think about it real hard. :-)
