We're Hunting for Apartments to Buy

Last week has been pretty busy. Work, social life, and hunting for appartments. (Unfortunately not as much time for school-work and weblog updates as I'd have liked.)

I guess the big news is that we've decided that now is a good time to start looking for a new, bigger and better (tm) place to buy.

Our previous plans were to wait until early next summer, but we then figured out that next summer would be hectic enough without adding house-hunting to it. Our double graduation from the art school, and planned wedding hullabaloo should be enough. Also: Now seems just as good a time as any to buy and sell heavy properties.

(Of course this also means is that our extremely nice little flat on Grettisgata will be for sale soon!)

What we're are looking for is a bigger place than we already have, with at least one extra room for Stína and me to work in, and maybe later on to store a small kid or two in. Of course we're very picky about what we like and what we don't. The place has to have a certain hard-to-define-but-easy-to-feel charm to it, while at the same time be in a decent condition so that we won't have to spend tons of hard-to-get extra money on repairs.

As before we limit our search to the city centre in Reykjavík and the ajoint areas. We value greatly the ability to walk everywhere we go. We love the old houses and narrow streets - and the close proximity to Reykjavík's night-life scene.

We started our hunt last Wednesday and so far we've been to 12 places of varying size, price and quality. I've made a raw chronological-list of addresses with the general overall feeling we got after looking at them in parenthesis ("ask-price" is one of many factors):

  4. Smiđjustígur 11, top (++ although price being too high considering the condition of the property exterior)

  8. Laugavegur 40, 2l. back (0)
  9. Ingólfsstrćti 8, top (--)
  10. Laugavegur 143, top (+)
  11. Miđtún 22, basem. (0)
  12. Hverfisgata 112, 2l. (0)

Then there were a handful of other places that were, either already sold, or turned out to be not for sale at all! - go figure...

We're now taking it easy for a couple of days, while reviewing our options before we make an offer for Njálsgata 16, and if that fails maybe for Smiđjustígur 11 - although we'll probably look around again at what other options have appeared in the meantime.
