Language Carries Culture

Written September 22. 2000, at 15:00 GMT.

Some loosely formed thoughts jotted down in class:

Our language is a carrier medium for our culture.

We translate our culture and our ideas into words to keep them alive - to pass them on to others. But information coded into language disintigrates as it is passed along - often in subtle ways that change its meaning.

This disintigration then causes feedback in the system so that our culture and our ideas change because of the imperfections in the carrier medium.

I feel that I'm (probably) merely rephrasing something that has been said by others many times before. Personal mindplay.
