Eurovision 2000

Written May 14. 2000, at 18:05 GMT.

Last night the Eurovision Song Contest was on TV. Like every year the Icelandic nation crowded around their TVs enthusiastically watching this festival of the Eurotrash.

This year the Icelandic song was pretty bland. It ended in 12th place. Denmark won with their surprizingly mediocre sing-along tune played by two middle-aged guys - the Olsen Brothers.

My personal favourite from the competition was the Russian song "Solo". The singer Alsou was pretty (very!!) and the song was not bad at all. Her whole performance was reminiscent of the US pop-star Britney Spears. From the on-stage coreography, to the lyrics, to the arrangement of the music. Fun to watch, fun to sing along with and, eh yes, fun to watch!

The Germans were also *so* great! Their army of glam-clad disco bimbos (male and female) singing lyrics that were mostly gibberish was beyond believe. This along with Germany's unforgettable 1998 contestant, Gildo, has finally put Germany on the top of my Eurovision-favourites list.

Iceland in the Times of Eurovision

It's kind of funny, but the night of the Eurovision song contest seems to be the one night of the year where Icelandic hooliganism reigns.

The tradition is for (mostly) young people to crowd together in wild Eurovision parties with drinking, and shouting and cheering. Everyone is making smart-ass jokes about the contestants and the songs, and whole nationalities get (verbally!) abused when Iceland gets no points - especially if they've already gotten points from us.

Afterwards the sofa-hooligans flock out and into the night-life scene, hunting for some real music and more drinks in order to forget about the whole thing as quickly as possible.

Icelanders seem to appreciate the usual cynicism connected with Eurotrash^H^H^H^H^Hvision, but instead of stopping there we take it further and turn it into a new kind of pure entertainment.

Eurovision!!
