Open Source Books and Magazines?
There's a relatively lifely discussion going on at Userland about Opening Up Linux Journal and O'Reilly. Interesting.
I have a quick idea about how an open source magazine work. A company could provide a hosting space for a lively discussion (OPL?) and then review, collect and extract (editorial job) the highlights from the discussion, bundle up with assorted quality articles (or article pointers) and other sorts of texts from all over the net and then print and sell (or provide online to paying members.) The members would then be paying for the editorial service but not the content. This sort of company might even mix the free content with bought (copyrighted) articles.
This is actually very, very close to something my friend Bjarni was talking to me about yesterday evening, and something that has been done for quite some time (for free) on the Linux Kernel mailing list.
